How to get from Galeão to Copacabana or Ipanema
Compare app rides, official taxis, private transfers and the special bus–VLT–metro route from Galeão to Copacabana or Ipanema.

For most visitors arriving at Galeão (GIG), an app ride or official taxi is the practical choice for Copacabana or Ipanema. Both provide a single trip to your accommodation. Public transport costs less, but the useful route to the beach neighborhoods requires two changes and suits travelers with light luggage whose flights arrive well within operating hours.
Fares and operating information below were checked on October 30, 2026.
The options at a glance
| Option | Changes | Best for | Main drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| App ride | None | Most solo travelers, couples and small groups | Price varies with demand and traffic |
| Official taxi | None | Travelers who want to arrange a ride at the terminal | Compare the quoted fare with the live app price |
| Prebooked transfer | None | Larger groups, child-seat requests and arranged meet-and-greet | Details must be confirmed in advance |
| Special bus + VLT + metro | Two | Light luggage and a lower budget | Three separate transport legs |
There is no metro station at Galeão. The airport lists several bus services, but none of those listed goes directly to Copacabana or Ipanema; its most useful published connection toward the beach neighborhoods is the special bus to Terminal Gentileza.
App ride: the simplest default
After collecting your bags, request the ride in the app and check the registration, driver and pickup instructions before entering the car. RIOgaleão says its dedicated Uber pickup area is on the arrivals level: turn left after leaving the arrivals area (RIOgaleão pickup information). Follow the current in-app and airport signs rather than older online advice about meeting upstairs.
Enter your accommodation’s full street address, not only “Copacabana” or “Ipanema.” The final destination within either neighborhood can materially affect the trip.
App prices are dynamic, so check the live quote after baggage claim. Road time also varies with traffic.
Choose this when: you have mobile data, can use the app and want door-to-door travel without arranging it before your flight.
Official taxi: arrange it at the airport
RIOgaleão lists common and executive taxi operators at Terminal 2:
- Common taxis: level 0, door A, near domestic arrivals.
- Executive taxis: level 0, door B, near domestic arrivals.
The airport says fares are based on either a meter or a city-regulated table and links the current fare tables on its official taxi page. Confirm whether your fare is metered or table-based, the destination and the payment method before departure.
A sensible arrival routine is to compare the official taxi fare with the live app quote. Use a listed desk or designated rank rather than negotiating with someone who approaches you in the terminal.
Choose this when: you do not want to arrange an app ride, have limited mobile data or prefer dealing with a taxi operator at the airport.
Prebooked transfer: useful for specific requirements
A private transfer is not necessary for a routine arrival, but it can simplify coordination when you need:
- a vehicle sized for several passengers and suitcases;
- a child seat confirmed in advance;
- a named meet-and-greet;
- a price and payment arrangement settled before flying.
Before booking, verify the meeting point, included waiting time, flight-delay policy, luggage capacity and cancellation terms. The words “private transfer” alone do not establish what is included.
Choose this when: a specific vehicle or arrival arrangement matters more than finding the lowest fare.
Public transport: special bus, VLT and metro
The most straightforward public-transport route is:
- At Terminal 2 arrivals, take the special Galeão–Terminal Gentileza bus. RIOgaleão publishes a fare of R$15 and links to Mobi-Rio for operating information (airport bus information). Check the timetable on your travel day; the airport warns that schedules and fares can change.
- At Terminal Gentileza, board VLT Line 1 (blue) toward Santos Dumont.
- Leave at Carioca or Cinelândia. The VLT operator identifies both as MetrôRio interchange stops (VLT Line 1 route).
- Enter the metro and follow signs for trains toward the Zona Sul and Jardim Oceânico side of the network. Use the station nearest your accommodation: - Copacabana: Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos or Cantagalo. - Ipanema: General Osório or Nossa Senhora da Paz.
At the published full fares, the three legs total R$27.90: R$15 for the airport bus, R$5 for the VLT and R$7.90 for the metro. The VLT runs daily from 5am to 11pm and requires a Jaé card or a QR code generated in the Jaé app. Jaé cards are sold and loaded at station machines (VLT fare and ticket guide).
MetrôRio accepts contactless Visa, Mastercard and Elo cards or compatible devices at its gates, along with the other tickets and transport cards it lists. Its published full fare is R$7.90 (MetrôRio payment options and fares).
This route means handling luggage through a bus terminal, a street-level tram and a metro station. The VLT operator also says large items may not be brought aboard. It is a poor fit for oversized bags, an arrival close to the VLT’s closing time or anyone who finds repeated boarding difficult.
Choose this when: all three legs are operating, your luggage is compact and the saving matters more than door-to-door convenience.
Match the metro station to the address
Do not select a stop from the neighborhood name alone. The five relevant stations run in this order from Centro:
- Cardeal Arcoverde, Siqueira Campos and Cantagalo in Copacabana;
- General Osório and Nossa Senhora da Paz in Ipanema.
Check the final walk using the exact accommodation address. MetrôRio’s official journey planner identifies each station with its neighborhood. If the walk is long or awkward with luggage, the apparent public-transport saving may not be worthwhile.
A practical decision rule
Take an app ride or official taxi if you arrive at night, have substantial luggage, travel with children or want the least complicated first hour in Rio.
Consider the Terminal Gentileza–VLT–metro route only when the timetable leaves a comfortable margin, your luggage is light and your accommodation is reasonably close to one of the five stations above. For three or four people, compare the group’s R$27.90-per-person public-transport total with a live car quote before leaving arrivals; sharing one vehicle can narrow the price difference considerably.
